DIY Tips

Your front door is more than just an entry point — it sets the tone for your entire home. Over time, sun, rain, and daily use can leave it faded or worn. With the right prep and PPG Paints Water Based Enamel, you can refresh your front door and instantly boost your home’s curb appeal.

Even if you’re new to painting, this project is simple. Follow these step-by-step instructions to give your front door a fresh, professional-looking finish.

Why Use Water Based Enamel on a Front Door?

Front doors need a tough, durable paint. Enamels are designed to resist knocks, weather and wear. Water based enamel, like PPG Paints Water Based Enamel, is the smarter choice because it:

  • Dries fast (recoat in as little as 2 hours)

  • Has low odour for easier DIY

  • Won’t yellow over time like oil-based paints

  • Cleans up easily with water

Step 1: Choose Your Colour

Your front door is a statement piece. Think about how the colour complements your walls, trims, and landscaping.

  • Bold colours: Reds, deep blues, or greens create instant impact

  • Timeless neutrals: Black, charcoal or grey offer sophistication

  • Welcoming whites: Fresh, bright and versatile

Step 2: Prepare the Door

If possible, remove the door from its hinges. If not, you can work around it as shown in the video.

  • Protect the area: Lay drop cloths at the base and tape around glass panels, handles, locks, or nearby trims.

  • Clean thoroughly: Wash away dirt, dust, and grease with mild detergent. Then let dry.

  • Sand back worn areas: Smooth out flaking paint or glossy patches for better adhesion.

  • Prime where needed: Use PPG Paints 3 in 1 Primer Sealer Undercoat on sections with visible wear and tear. It seals and primes those spots so your topcoat sticks and looks brand new.

Step 3: Start Painting

  • Stir the paint thoroughly and pour into a tray.

  • Begin with the outer sections — edges and frame.

  • Work inward, covering larger panels with a roller.

  • If your door has grooves or decorative details, use a brush for those areas then a roller over flat sections for an even finish.

Step 4: Apply a Second Coat

  • Allow the first coat to dry for around 2 hours.

  • Apply a second coat, again starting from the outside and working in.

  • Once dry, remove the painter’s tape and step back to admire your refreshed door.

Pro Tips for the Best Finish

  • Keep a steady pace to maintain a wet edge, preventing lap marks.

  • Use a good-quality roller and brush to reduce streaks.

  • Clean tools with water straight after use.
